Pool Fence Installation in Sarasota & Manatee County
Pool barriers that keep kids and pets safe and are built to pass inspection, with gates that close and latch on their own.
A pool fence has two jobs: keep kids and pets safe, and pass inspection the first time. Costa Key Fence plans and installs pool barriers for homes across Sarasota and Manatee County. Most are aluminum, some are vinyl, and every one has a gate that closes and latches on its own.
What a Florida pool barrier has to do
Florida’s Residential Swimming Pool Safety Act (Chapter 515, Florida Statutes) and the Florida Building Code set the baseline for residential pool barriers. In plain terms, a compliant barrier is generally:
- At least 4 feet tall, measured on the side away from the pool.
- Free of gaps a small child could squeeze through or climb, so picket spacing and the gap at the bottom both matter.
- Fitted with gates that open outward, away from the pool, and that self-close and self-latch, with the latch release mounted high or shielded on the pool side.
- Continuous. It can’t depend on a removable panel or a door that doesn’t meet the rules.
Sarasota County, Manatee County and the cities (Sarasota, Venice, North Port, Bradenton, Palmetto) each review pool barriers through their own building departments, and some details differ. We confirm the current requirements with the office that will inspect your job before we order material. (We describe the rules; your permit office has the final word.)
Which material works best around a pool
- Aluminum (most common). Rust-resistant powder coat, see-through so you keep the view of the water and the yard, and easy to meet spacing rules with standard pool-code panels. Our first choice near salt air and sprinklers. More on aluminum fencing.
- Vinyl. A good fit when the pool barrier doubles as a privacy fence along a property line. It needs a careful gate setup so the self-closing hardware works on a heavier gate. More on vinyl fencing.
- Mesh or removable barriers. We don’t install these. If you want one, a pool-safety specialist is the right call.
Gates are where pool fences fail inspection
Most failed pool-barrier inspections come down to the gate, not the fence. We hang pool gates with self-closing hinges and a magnetic or gravity latch, set the swing away from the water, and test that the gate closes and latches from any open position before the inspector comes. Sandy soil and summer storms can shift a gate post, so we set gate posts in concrete.
Our pool-fence process
- Site visit. We walk the pool area, the doors and windows that open onto it, and your property lines and easements.
- Plan + permit. We draw the layout, handle the permit with the right county or city office, and check with your HOA’s architectural committee if you have one.
- Install. Usually a short on-site job once the permit is approved and the material is in.
- Inspection-ready. We test every gate and walk the line with you.
Pool fence + the rest of the yard
Many customers add a pool barrier to an existing fence. We can tie an aluminum pool section into an existing vinyl or wood fence, add a matching walk gate, or repair a damaged section so the whole barrier is continuous. See fence permits in Sarasota & Manatee and our fence cost guide.

Pool Fence FAQ
How tall does a pool fence have to be in Florida?
Florida’s pool safety law sets the residential barrier at a minimum of 4 feet. Your local building department may add details on spacing, gates and placement, so we confirm the current rules with the office that will inspect your job.
Do I need a permit for a pool fence in Sarasota or Manatee County?
Usually yes. Pool barriers are normally permitted and inspected. We handle the permit with the county or city office that covers your address.
What’s the best pool fence material near the coast?
Powder-coated aluminum. It resists rust, keeps the view open and meets pool-code spacing with standard panels.
Can you add a pool fence to my existing fence?
Often, yes. We tie a code-compliant section and a self-closing gate into your existing fence, as long as the whole barrier stays continuous.
How much does a pool fence cost?
It depends on linear footage, material, gates and site conditions. See our fence cost guide or call (941) 962-4898 for a free on-site estimate.
